Angle of Repose - Book Review

One of my favorite booksellers and co-workers, Ken, from Books and Company, recommended this book to me. It is an effortful read and absolutely worth it. A reminder of what writing, and reading was like before the fast-paced digital world of today. It was written in 1970 and a lot of it is about the 1880s. It is a story of a 50ish old man who has recently been forced to live in a wheelchair. He decides to take on the personal task of being his grandmother’s biographer. As he writes his grandmothers’ courageous story as a pioneer woman who was also an artist, he is forced to face the reality of his own life.

I love a book that inspires me to stop reading and take notes - that happened often while reading this book. One theme from this book that really resonated with me was how the character of the grandmother sometimes missed out on moments in her life because she was so busy drawing them instead of being present in them. It made me think of myself and how I too can miss moments by taking pictures for social media instead of being present in the moment. I welcome the reminder to be in the moment. I also love a book that lingers with you after you read the last page. Angle of Repose’s masterful presentation of forgiveness is staying with me. I hope for a long time.

I absolutely recommend this book if you are NOT looking for a beach read. I love beach reads and NOT beach reads to fill my summers. I’m grateful I put in the extra effort for this one. It is a timeless treasure. I look forward to reading Crossing to Safety also by Wallace Stegner soon. Though my next book will likely be an easy read.
