My Meditation Story

Meditation saved me and I didn’t know that I needed to be saved. I was a busy mom of four, married to my high school sweet heart, trying to build my own wellness business and life slowly started to feel out of control. I was on the treadmill of life, so busy, so tired, spent.

I read plenty of articles about how meditation is good for us mentally, spiritually and physically. I made starting a meditation practice a new year’s resolution several times but the idea of sitting down and quieting my mind was impossible. There was way too much to do. Then my older brother, who has been a mentor to me throughout my life, recommended the meditation app, Headspace. For some reason the timing was right and I downloaded the app and started my meditation practice.

A practice that enables me to be an anchor for my family. A practice that has brought a peace to my life I didn’t know was possible.

The hardest part with meditation is the starting. I thought I had to have this perfect place to meditate. Finally I started meditating sitting in a chair at our kitchen table. Now I do love my meditation pillow and enjoy using meditation inspirations including my essential oils, crystals and singing bowls. But truly you need nothing to meditate. There is no wrong way to meditate, no perfect way to meditate. All it takes is sitting down, paying attention to your breath and quieting your mind.

I recently went to my first silent retreat and was completely awestruck by the compilation of attendees. Every race, religion, shape and size were represented at the retreat. Meditation does not belong to one religion. It does not ask you to give up any beliefs or cultural traditions. It is a universal life skill that I believe can bring peace and healing to our world.
