The House Across the Lake - Book Review

The title and cover of the latest mystery by Riley Sager caught my eye this summer. I have not read Sager’s other New York Times best-selling mysteries. I’m not a big mystery reader. I like the fast pace of a mystery, but I don’t really like the feeling of anxiety and uncertainty that stir in me while reading a mystery. I read this one ferociously just so I could get to the end and find out what happened. When I finished the book, I was somewhat satisfied, but I didn’t love it.

We sell a lot of mystery novels at the bookstore, and I want to have at least a couple that I can recommend with enthusiasm and confidence. Unfortunately, this isn’t it. The plot had some decent twists and turns, but it was just a bit much for me. I’m pretty sure it’s my problem of being a bit too much of a realist. I could embrace being a friend to an octopus in Remarkably Bright Creatures a lot easier than I could Sager’s spiritual overtake, and I even believe in ghosts. I’m curious what other people think of this book. It quickly rose to NYT bestseller, so people are reading it.

Now the question of what to read next. This is one of the challenges of working in a bookstore. There are endless options. What should I read next? What are you reading? What was your favorite book you read in the last six months? I would love to hear from you! Comment below or use the connect link.
