Live Music
Concerts are nothing new, but I think they are gaining popularity as people are yearning for opportunities that bring us together. Going to concerts is first and foremost fun but I think they are gaining more meaning in today’s fast paced society. The concert experience can draw you in and raise you up. The great musicians perform in the zone and they bring the crowd with them into the zone where nothing else matters but the music. When the crowd sings along an amazing collective energy is created. That energy can be comforting and energizing.
Musicians have always had the opportunity to share their political opinions in their lyrics and in between songs. One of my favorite musicians, Michael Franti, uses his concerts to share a message of unity, hope and peace.
Justin Timberlake is clearly living in flow when he performs. He puts so much energy into his shows as he dances non stop during his two hour show. But it isn’t just his dancing; it is his connecting with his fans that adds to the experience. At a recent concert in Milwaukee he did a shot in cheers to the Packers and accepted Packers jerseys from a fan. It was clear that he was not going through the motions, he was fully present!
And then there is the affable Ed Sheeran who pours so much emotion and honesty into his music stirring the heart of anyone willing to listen. He is a story of the kid that didn’t fit in, turned to music, worked really hard and is now a one man band selling out stadiums around the world. His music makes us feel. Clearly by his popularity we are looking for opportunities to feel.
My favorite part of going to a concert is sharing it with the people I go with. It is a shared experience that is bonding in the moment and in the memory. I especially appreciate the musicians that appeal to multiple generations! I love going to concerts with my kids and fortunately they tolerate it!! The excitement when they play that song we were hoping for is awesome! And just the experience of being together fills my bucket. I’m grateful for the concert experience and all the amazing musicians that commit to the art and create. And whether it is a sold out stadium show or a couple friends and a guitar - live music feeds my soul.
Musicians have an amazing opportunity to positively impact the world. Maybe our next president should be a musician.
